From Service to Freedom — Securing Homeownership
Fort Freedom Foundation empowers disabled veterans near Fort Bragg, NC, by providing access to safe, affordable, and accessible homeownership. Through the acquisition, renovation, resale, and education on VA loan benefits and financial literacy, we aim to prevent veterans from being priced out of the housing market and restore dignity through stable housing.
At Fort Freedom Foundation, we transform the dream of homeownership into a reality for disabled veterans. Our services include acquiring and renovating homes with ADA-compliant, sustainable features—ensuring safety, comfort, and long-term affordability. We resell these homes below market value to qualified veterans using VA loans with no down payment. Through partnerships with lenders like Edge Home Finance and access to grant funding, we also help cover closing costs and reduce monthly housing expenses. Beyond housing, we offer education on financial readiness and VA loan benefits to help veterans transition from service to stable, dignified homeownership.
At Fort Freedom Foundation, we believe that homeownership is more than having a place to live—it’s the foundation for belonging, security, and connection. That’s why we’re committed to building not just homes, but a supportive community for disabled veterans. When veterans become homeowners through our program, they gain more than a set of keys—they join a network of peers, mentors, and resources designed to help them thrive. From financial education to ongoing support, we’re here to ensure every veteran feels confident and connected in their new home.

Dr. Bernie Justilien is a Florida Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. He obtained
a Doctorate in Organizational Psychology (EdD), a Master of Arts in Adlerian
Counseling and Psychotherapy, and a Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology. He is
currently providing Mental Health Counseling and Psychological Evaluations for
individuals seeking VA Benefits, Social Security Disability, Court-Ordered Mental Health
Exams, and those needing Psychological Evaluations for Medication Management. His
dedication to practicing Psychotherapy is longstanding and rooted in his professional,
educational, and personal experiences. His exposure to global poverty, wars, and
natural disasters has significantly influenced his life. Now, as a Retired Marine Veteran
and Mental Health Therapist, he is passionate about helping clients achieve their
personal goals.
Dr. Bernie’s understanding of military culture significantly shapes his therapeutic
approach with veterans, creating a more effective and trusting environment. His
dedication to veteran mental health is further demonstrated by his own experience with
homelessness after his military discharge and his subsequent journey to becoming a
counselor, highlighting a deep empathy for the struggles faced by veterans and a
commitment to helping them overcome these challenges. Talk therapy—just as it did for
Dr. Bernie—offers his clients tools for personal growth and supports them in various
aspects of life. Instead of viewing military service as just a job, he recognizes it as a
foundational aspect of many veterans' identities and values. He's familiar with the direct
and clear communication style often favored in the military, which can be misinterpreted
by civilian clinicians.
Therefore, he knows that many veterans may avoid seeking help due to the stigma
associated with mental health issues within the military culture. He can address this
directly, normalizing the struggle and framing therapy as a strength and a "mission" for
recovery. His military experience provides insight into the specific nuances of moral
injury, which can arise from actions or inactions during service that conflict with one's
moral values. He can create a space for veterans to process feelings of guilt, shame, or
betrayal related to these experiences.
In summary, Dr. Bernie's military service provides him with a unique blend of personal
experience and professional insight that significantly enhances his ability to effectively
counsel and support veterans on their mental health journeys. His background fosters
trust, deepens understanding, and enables him to provide veteran-specific care tailored
to their unique needs, regardless of their experiences.
